Here I've deduced how the correct word for translating the English word  Religion in Sanskrit according to the meaning and the  sense  would be 

कर्म

This could follow how far my assertion is right if we try to understand the verses 16 and 17 of Shrimadbhagvad-gita.

किं कर्म किमकर्मेति कवयोऽप्यत्र मोहिताः।।

तत्ते कर्म प्रवक्ष्यामि यज्ज्ञात्वा मोक्ष्यसेऽशुभात्।।१६।।

कर्मणो ह्यपि बोद्धव्यं बोद्धव्यं चापि विकर्मणः।।

अकर्मणश्च ह्यपि बोद्धव्यं गहना कर्मणो गतिः।।१७।।
