अध्याय 17, श्लोक 5,

अशास्त्रविहितं घोरं तप्यन्ते ये तपो जनाः ।
दम्भाहङ्कारसंयुक्ताः कामरागबलान्विताः ॥

(अशास्त्रविहितम् घोरम् तप्यन्ते ये तपः जनाः ।
दम्भ-अहङ्कारसंयुक्ताः कामरागबलान्विताः ॥)

भावार्थ :
जो मनुष्य शास्त्र में निर्दिष्ट विधि से रहित, (मनमाने ढंग से) दम्भपूर्वक, अहंकारयुक्त, और कामना तथा आसक्ति तथा अपनी शक्ति के अभिमान से प्रेरित हुए, घोर तप करते हैं...।

aśāstravihitaṃ ghoraṃ
tapyante ye tapo janāḥ |
dambhāhaṅkārasaṃyuktāḥ
kāmarāgabalānvitāḥ ||

(aśāstravihitam ghoram
tapyante ye tapaḥ janāḥ |
dambha-ahaṅkārasaṃyuktāḥ
kāmarāgabalānvitāḥ ||)

Meaning :
Those, who prompted by false pride and ego, associated with cravings, attachment, and to show-off their power only, but without following the system as is laid down in the scriptures,  perform severe austerities, ... .
