आज का श्लोक, ’वह्निः’ / ’vahniḥ’

’वह्निः’ / ’vahniḥ’

अध्याय 3, श्लोक 38,

धूमेनाव्रियते वह्निः यथादर्शो मलेन च ।
यथोल्बेनावृतो गर्भस्तथा तेनेदमावृतः ॥
--
(धूमेन आव्रियते वह्निः यथा आदर्शः मलेन च ।
यथा उल्बेन आवृतः गर्भः तथा तेन इदम् आवृतम् ॥)
--
भावार्थ :
जैसे धुआँ अग्नि को ढँक लेता है, तथा जैसे दर्पण धूल से ढँक जाता है, जैसे उल्ब (जेर, कोषीय द्रव्य) से गर्भ ढँका होता है, वैसे ही यह (अपने स्वरूप का स्वाभाविक बोध) उस (रजोगुण से उत्पन्न होनेवाले काम-क्रोध रूपी अज्ञान) से ढँका होता है ।

टिप्पणी :
अध्याय 5 के श्लोक 15 में भी इस आशय का वर्णन निम्न प्रकार से पाया जाता है :

अध्याय 5, श्लोक 15,

नादत्ते कस्यचित्पापं न चैव सुकृतं विभुः ।
अज्ञानेनावृतं ज्ञानं तेन मुह्यन्ति जन्तवः ॥
--
( न आदत्ते कस्यचित् पापम् न च एव सुकृतम् विभुः ।
अज्ञानेन आवृतम् ज्ञानम् तेन मुह्यन्ति जन्तवः ॥)

भावार्थ :
न तो विधाता (परमेश्वर) किसी के पापकर्म को और न ही किसी के पुण्यकर्म को ग्रहण करता है, (अर्थात् विधाता की दृष्टि में न तो कोई पाप करता है और न ही पुण्य) किन्तु ज्ञान पर अज्ञान का आवरण होने से भ्रमवश, उस अज्ञान से मोहित होकर जीव अपने-आपको उन कर्मों का कर्ता समझ बैठता है ।

’वह्निः’ / ’vahniḥ’ - fire,

Chapter 3, śloka 38,

dhūmenāvriyate vahniḥ 
yathādarśo malena ca |
yatholbenāvṛto garbha-
stathā tenedamāvṛtaḥ ||
--
(dhūmena āvriyate vahniḥ 
yathā ādarśaḥ malena ca |
yathā ulbena āvṛtaḥ garbhaḥ
tathā tena idam āvṛtam ||)
--
Meaning :
The smoke hides the fire, the dust hides the mirror, And the membrane that covers the embryo hides it, quite so, that (desire and anger born of rajoguṇa) hides this (the natural and spontaneous awareness of the Self).
--
It is really a wonder that no one is ever unaware of the Self. But because of the superficial and false knowledge one-self as a person, a body and the relations of the body with its world, one seldom notes this bare fact. Obviously the awareness of one-self as pure consciousness only gets translated into the knowledge 'I am' such and such a man, woman, poor, wealthy, good or bad, etc., and this false acquired information blinds one and leads him to believe that he is the identity that was born as this body and shall die as the same, with its death.
A similar hint is found in the 15 of Chapter 5  as given below :

Chapter 5, śloka 15,

nādatte kasyacitpāpaṃ
na caiva sukṛtaṃ vibhuḥ |
ajñānenāvṛtaṃ jñānaṃ
tena muhyanti jantavaḥ ||
--
( na ādatte kasyacit pāpam
na ca eva sukṛtam vibhuḥ |
ajñānena āvṛtam jñānam
tena muhyanti jantavaḥ ||)
--
Meaning :
The Supreme Lord owns neither the sinful deeds of men, nor does He own their virtuous deeds, but because the Wisdom in the individual soul (self)  is covered under the veil of ignorance, men tend to entertain the delusion (and so believe themselves responsible for the good or the bad deeds), which they think they do.
